|Biographical notes:||Harriett was born to Frederick Robert Wedd and his wife Harriett Ellen (nee Richards) in 1861. Harriett married Samuel Thomas Brown, a businessman, on 2 May 1884 in Palmerston. Samuel had come to the Territory in 1874 with his father, who was the proprietor of the Southport Hotel. They had two children born and registered in the Northern Territory: Samuel Frederick Palmerston born 5 February 1885 and Claude William Darwin born 27 September 1886. Her father died of pneumonia in Victoria aged 52, a few days before the birth of her first son. A younger brother, William, appears to have been with her in Palmerston at the time of her father's death. In 1895 when Harriett was 35, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. Harriett registered at the Palmerston polling place. Her occupation was listed as "married woman". Harriett's brother George Fountain Wedd was also a well-known Territorian. George Fountain Wedd (1871-1951), born in Victoria, moved to Darwin in 1896 to work on the construction of the railway from Darwin to Pine Creek, and stayed on. For health reasons, Samuel and Harriett left the Territory on 22 October 1909 via the steamer Eastern, with the intention of settling in Victoria. Samuel died in Melbourne in November 1911 before he saw his second son, Claude William Darwin, married to Florence Gertrude Pott in Darwin on 6 June 1916. Harriett died in Melbourne 12 November 1943. A Wedd family history available on the internet contains further information.|
