|Biographical notes:||In the late 1920’s, Mary Ward and her husband Ted left Western Australia and came to the Northern Territory to try their luck in the goldfields of Tennant Creek. They developed the Blue Moon mine with Mary’s brother Stuart McEntyre. This proved a profitable partnership as the Blue Moon became a rich producer of gold. In 1940, the gold had begun to run out and the Wards decided to buy Banka Banka station. The cattle station and in particular Mary’s food garden supplied Tennant Creek with fresh produce. During World War II the station also had a government contract to supply food to the army staging camp at Banka Banka. Mary Ward cared for the health and education of the children on the station. Mary sent and financially supported many of the station’s Indigenous children to school in Alice Springs and Darwin, until a school was established on the station by the Welfare Department. For her care of Indigenous families and children, Mary was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1968. Source: Northern Territory dictionary of biography.
