Biographical notes: Eliza Hemmings was born in London to William Hemming, a soldier and his wife. She emigrated to Adelaide as a single servant girl in December 1854 when she was 18. Eliza married railway man Ned Tuckwell on 18 February 1857 in North Adelaide, South Australia when she was 21. The couple had five children although not all survived to adulthood. Ned went alone to the Territory in 1864 as part of the settlement at Escape Cliffs. He again went alone to the Territory with Goyder's survey party in 1867. The family travelled to Darwin on the first passenger ship in January 1870. Ned died in Palmerston on 23 April 1882 aged 51, leaving Eliza with four dependent children; the couple had lost a one year old son born in Palmerston. Eliza was to become a very successful business woman and landowner, being one of the few Territory women to pay taxes on her income in 1884 when the South Australian parliament imposed taxes on income. In 1895 when Eliza was 59, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. Her occupation was listed as 'boardinghouse keeper'. Her boarding house had the name Resolution Villa. Eliza's Territory born daughter Eleanor also enrolled to vote in 1895.
