Description: Harry Giese being welcomed by elders at the opening of the Museum of Aboriginal Culture. Harry Giese was Director of Welfare, NT Administration, from 1954-70. "At the Yuendumu settlement, an upsurge of traditional activities, corroborees and visiting sacred places occurred following the completion and opening of Yuendumu Museum. Large numbers of churingas and other ritual objects were collected from Wailbri areas far removed from Yuendumu and stored in the Museum for safe keeping. Wailbri men prepared ground mosaics on a large floor area in their museum and viewing of these was restricted to adult male members of the public. The mosaics were prepared on special occasions such as the annual sports meeting, and removed after the event." Source: Welfare Branch Annual Report, 1971-72, NT Administration, Darwin
