Being a Territory: schools digital art for centenary year 2011

To mark the Northern Territory’s centenary schools were invited to enter a digital art competition.

Being a Territory competition encouraged NT students to explore changes that have shaped their Territory, using digital arts to present their innovative take on events, themes, places and people who have contributed to a century and more of amazing stories.

Grants for the winning schools enabled students to work with experienced artists. The 5 winning schools were announced in May 2011. Their digital artworks were presented during the Darwin and Alice Springs arts festivals.

Darwin presentations were screened on the ‘magic lantern’ projection cube specially designed for the installation, in State Square 19 - 21 August and Festival Park 25 August. In Alice Springs the presentations were shown in Anzac Oval 10 -11 September and in Todd Mall 15 September.

Visitors to the free events interacted with digital technologies in response to centenary themes and were encouraged to send a SMS message to the digital guestbook projected within the installation.

Being a Territory commemorates the Territory seen through the eyes of young Territorians. Here’s their story told in the 12 unique presentations held in this collection.

Prior permission must be obtained from schools before copying or publicly displaying any part of their presentations.
