| Biographical notes: | Mettam, Lieutenant Albert
Frank, 7th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces, killed in action somewhere in France. Dearly beloved youngest son of William and brother of Alfred Mettam of Darwin. Northern Territory Times and Gazette, Saturday 1 June 1918. Red cross wounded and missing file: I saw Lieutenant Mettam killed. We were in billet at Borre (in Hazebrouck Sector). The Germans were shelling our billets. A piece of shell came in the door and caught him in the stomach. He was not killed outright. He was put on a stretcher. While carrying him out another shell came and blew the stretcher out of the bearer's hands. I saw all this happen. When picked up he was dead. He was buried in the Cemetery at Borre, to the best of my knowledge. A Padre was present. Height 5'9", medium complexion, stout build, age about 26-7. |
