Description:
|
The bookkeepers cottage on Snells Contracting base at Maranga, next to the company's office building which still stands (1986) next to the Maranga Hotel. During the 1947-49 period it was not possible for former lease holders/owners of prewar property in Darwin township to obtain long term leases of their former blocks. The firm therefore leased a large area at Maranga adjacent to land held by Kennon Co. A type of village was constructed by the firm comprising partner's homes, employee homes, a small hall used as a kindegarten, Sunday School, single men's quarters, canteen, mess and mechanic shop, joinery shop, saw mill, etc. Harold Snell died 16/4/49.
