Description:

Pilot Russell Tapp (left) handing mail to postmaster Hurtle (who was later killed in the bombing of Darwin). Plane HD61 Giant Moth VH-UJB 'Apollo' of Qantas. It arrived at Darwin from Brisbane with the first Aus-Eng experimental air mail. It was then flown by Kingsford Smith in the 'Southern Cross' (Fokker F.V11b/3m VH-USU) to Akyab (Burma) for transfer to Imperial Airways aircraft thence to England. |
